Shari L. Meyerson, MD
Dr. Meyerson completed her thoracic surgery training at Duke University. She initially practiced at the University of Arizona in Tucson before being recruited to Northwestern in 2010 as an Associate Professor of Surgery in the Division of Thoracic Surgery. She also holds a joint appointment as an Associate Professor of Pulmonary Medicine. She is Program Director for both the integrated and traditional thoracic residency programs at Northwestern as well as Program Director for general surgery. Her clinical practice focuses on minimally invasive surgery for lung cancer and metastatic disease to the lung as well as benign and malignant diseases of the mediastinum, chest wall, pleura and esophagus. Dr. Meyerson’s primary academic focus is education. Research topics include operative autonomy during residency, identification and recovery from operative errors and validity in educational testing. She is currently completing a Master’s of Education from the University of Cincinnati and looks forward to continued efforts to improve the education of thoracic and general surgery residents both locally and nationally.
Patrick M. McCarthy, MD
Associate Program Director
Dr. McCarthy is the Heller-Sacks Professor of Surgery in the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University and Chief of the Division of Cardiac Surgery. Dr. McCarthy has achieved international recognition in complex adult cardiac surgery especially valve and atrial fibrillation surgery. He has performed over 10,000 heart operations. Dr. McCarthy has authored or co-authored more than 400 papers and 50 book chapters. He has been on the editorial board of eight medical journals and is an officer in numerous professional societies.
