Vascular Surgery Residency

Integrated Vascular Surgery (0+5) Program

Approval for a primary certificate in vascular surgery has provided alternative training paradigms dedicated to this evolving discipline. The primary advantage of an integrated program is the ability to train residents in both general and vascular surgery in five years with a specific focus on the principles of vascular and endovascular surgery. The rotation schedule, which is overseen by the vascular surgery program director, integrates relevant core general surgical rotations during the first three years, dedicated vascular surgery rotations in the fourth year, and concluding with a 12-month chief residency experience in vascular surgery during the fifth year. At the completion of this curriculum the trainee will have spent 36 months on the vascular surgery service and 24 months on core or general surgery rotations. The later rotations include general surgery, laparoscopic surgery, endocrine surgery, surgical oncology, trauma, transplant, critical care, plastic surgery, pediatric surgery, and cardiothoracic surgery. Upon completion of this program, candidates will be eligible for primary certification in Vascular Surgery.

Vascular Surgery Scientist Training

The Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program at Northwestern University is a two-year mentored research training experience for residents in general and vascular surgery (PGY-3 and -4), funded by a T32 grant from NIH. The T32 mechanism provides a stipend, tuition, fees for coursework, travel funds, and health insurance. Learn more about the program via the Division of Vascular Surgery's Education section.
