NQUIRES Research Fellowship
Northwestern University’s Northwestern Quality Improvement, Research & Education in Surgery (NQUIRES) offers mentorship, lectures, collaboration and support for postdocs interested in surgical outcomes, health services and health policy research for surgical residents to pursue during their research years.
Research fellows can earn a Masters or PhD degree that bests suits their needs through one of the programs offered at Northwestern.
Prior fellows have had very successful research experiences, including numerous presentations (e.g., American Surgical Association, American College of Surgeons), first-author publications (e.g., JAMA, Annals of Surgery), and successful grant acquisitions (e.g., NIH, American Cancer Society).
The work done during the fellowship has launched successful research careers and has helped residents secure coveted clinical fellowships, faculty positions and extramural funding. NQUIRES helps to prepare fellows for a career in academic surgery with a focus on national surgical healthcare issues.
Independent of funding source, all surgical postdocs are welcome to participate in NQUIRES.
Two approaches are suggested for interested residents:
- Directly contact faculty who you wish to work with. They can help navigate funding sources.
- Apply to specific training grants. Examples of funding sources are listed below for interested residents:
- T32 COllaborative Northwestern Surgical Oncology Research Training (MPD: Seema Khan, Ronald Ackermann)
- P01 - Integrated mechanisms of primary and chronic graft dysfunction following lung transplantation (PI: Ankit Bharat)
- T32 Transplant Surgery Scientist Program (MPD: Daniela Ladner, Richard Green)
- T32 The University of Chicago and Northwestern University Postdoctoral Health Services Research Program (PD: Tara Lagu)
- T32 Vascular Surgery Scientist Training Program (PD: Mark Eskandari)
- For underrepresented minority residents, 'Supplement for Diversity and Inclusion' can be submitted to existing R01/U01/T32 awards at Northwestern University. (NIH defines as: Black/African American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander)
